Set with 18 acres of manicured lawns and ancient woodland, Walworth Castle dates back to the 12th century, and was the ancestral home of the Hansard family for centuries. In 1603 Walworth Castle hosted King James I of England. During World War II the castle was used as a prison for high-ranking German officers and after the war Walworth served as a girls school. Since the 1980s Walworth Castle has been a romantic castle hotel providing luxury accommodation in Co. Durham.

Each of the guest rooms have been individually designed, executive standards have all the usual facilities and contemporary furnishings. While other suites have been decorated in keeping with the historic character of the castle, many boasting four poster and half tester beds, along with views of the gardens.

Walworth Castle offers a range of award winning dining facilities; Hansard's Restaurant mixes modern and traditional themes, set in a large 16th century room with a menu of imaginative contemporary dishes, while for something a little more intimate, Hansard's Library is located in the original castle tower. The Farmer's Bar at the hotel is a traditional rural English pub complete with open fireplace, serving traditional bar meals and a hearty carvery.

Walworth Castle is set amid the rolling scenery of the Co. Durham countryside, close to the A1 the primary route from London to Edinburgh . Sights nearby include Durham Cathedral , once one of the richest and most important church buildings in England and an important UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the revered holy relics of St Cuthbert.
