Tate Modern
The stark towering exterior of the former Bankside Power station marks an perfect ironic statement as the place in which the Tate’s collection of modern works from the last 100 years are housed. Its vacuous areas are ideal for huge installations and film and video mediums that seem to dominate the contemporary art scene.
The displays map out a history of modern art from this century and the deeply politicised movements around the post war period. All major forms are represented and the collection includes some major works from Dali, Piccaso, Jackson Pollock, Roden and Warhol. Contemporary British artists are also strongly featured with works from the likes of Gilbert and George, Damian Hirst and Tracey Emin.
It’s a collection that will feature something for everyone but not everything will be to everyone’s taste. As it’s largely free it’s worth a visit and it’s a good excuse to walk over the new millennium bridge.
The Museum also hosts special events and exhibitions of modern artists on a regular basis.
