Inspiration for Wordsworth himself, the Swan Hotel in Grasmere is a traditional coaching inn, brimming with character and spectacularly located deep in the Lake District National park.

Built in 1650 as a coaching inn, referred to in Wordsworth's poem 'The Waggoner', and stayed in by Sir Walter Scott, the Swan Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the Lake District. The small, historic, whitewashed building nestles cosily and fittingly against the contrasting background of lush green hills and fells. The atmosophere inside is one of true Cumbrian welcome; relaxing, informal and unstuffy it maintains that feel of local countryside inn. The atmospheric Cygnet Room provides deep sofas in which to curl up by the log-fire with a book and a drink and sample some of the local gingerbread. Finally the Walkers Bar is the traditional country pub at the Swan Hotel. With muddy boots and dogs welcome, it is the ideal place to enjoy an English Ale and meet the locals and walkers from all over the UK.
