DetailsStart Within this itinerary is a stay in that quintessentially English town of Windsor, situated on the River Thames and home to the Queen’s favourite residence; Windsor Castle. Adjacent to Windsor is Eton famed for its college, which has schooled High Society for centuries. Perfect for ambling around its quaint cobbled streets and fine Georgian architecture. DAY 2 From Windsor you could travel to Oxford and wonder around the famous college quads of Magdelen, Christ Church and Queens and learn about some of Oxfords literary Dons such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Afterwards stop by the hamlet of Woodstock dominated by its most famous residence; Blenheim Palace, a fabulous Baroque Mansion and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Then head into the glorious countryside of the Cotswolds, passing through sleepy villages with quaint names like Chipping Campden and Moreton-in the-Marsh. DAY 3 From the Cotwolds you’re ideally placed for a visit to the birthplace of the Bard; Stratford-upon-Avon. Visit the William Shakespeare heritage sites; Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Hall’s Croft, and finally Shakespeare’s grave at Holy Trinity Church. Why not cap the evening by taking in a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the banks of the River Avon. Not far from Stratford-upon-Avon is the magnificent medieval fortress of Warwick Castle home to the Earls of Warwick since the 14th Century and now a stunning visitor attraction bringing the past to life. DAY 4 From Stratford, take a leisurely drive through the Welsh Marches; the borderlands between England and Wales. You’ll pass through the towns of Worcester and Hereford, decked with timber fronted Tudor buildings dating back to Shakespeare’s times, before crossing into Wales and stopping off at the curious little town of Hay-on-Wye. Hay is the self proclaimed ‘Second Hand Book Capital of the World’ and is renowned in literary circles for its eccentric shops and bookstalls. DAY 5 Heading towards Bath, you could stop off at the cathedral city of Gloucester whose cathedral cloisters you may recognise from the Harry Potter films or explore the industrial and maritime heritage of Bristol. Once in Bath you can immerse yourself in the elegant and historic surroundings of this great city, from its splendidly preserved Roman Baths, to its wonderful Georgian architecture and enjoy its range of exclusive designer shops. DAY 6 & 7 From Bath, take the road to the capital via Salisbury Plain, stopping of at the most famous standing stones in the world; Stonehenge. Afterwards carry on into London where you can spend the evening watching a play at the Globe Theatre, reconstructed as it would have been in Shakespeare’s day or catch a more modern show in London’s Westend.
