Take 6 days to see England’s unique north country where you’ll experience the contrasts of cityscapes and country life visiting areas that inspired both poetry and pop. See Europe’s Capital of Culture, Liverpool, the unrivalled scenery of the Lake District, walk Hadrians Wall and visit the Roman city of York. A completely unique culture and people.

The Tour

Day 1

After arriving in Manchester journey East and begin your tour of the North in York, once the capital of the Roman Empire. The city maintains its grandeur with the medieval city walls, watch towers and gates still intact around large parts of the city. York is home to the famous Shambles, Britain’s oldest shopping street where timber fronted shops tilt and lean over the narrow cobbled lane and you can still pick up meats and cheeses as well as some handmade souvenirs for your friends back home. York is dominated however by the “must-see” York Minster the impressive Cathedral that can be seen all around and boasts some of the most intricate gothic architecture of the North.

Day 2

Today’s journey takes you through the Yorkshire Dales and the countryside which was the setting for the histories of James Herriot and his countryside veterinary practice. If you travel out to the East Coast you can visit Whitby, a quaint town with cobbled streets and fishing boats bobbing in the docks. If you’re feeling energetic climb the hundred stone steps to the cliff-top Abbey over looking the crashing waves. A quick stop in Durham will allow you a visit to this city’s impressive cathedral before continuing further north to the ancient border between England and Scotland. Take a stroll along parts of Hadrian’s wall still standing since the times when the Roman Emperors were trying to hold out the Scottish Pictish Tribes. Return to the market town of Hexham for supper.

Overnight hexham.

Day 3

From here travel west and along the path of the Wall before turning Southwards at Carlisle in to the heart of Cumbria where you have the opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity of the Lake District. As you wind through the dales and valleys and along-side the peaceful lakes of Windermere and Grasmere you will soon see why this region inspired artists such as Turner and the beautiful poetry of William Wordsworth and the internationally famous countryside tales of Beatrix Potter. Spend the day strolling the banks of the lakes, taking boat rides or other activities on the waters and exploring the host of traditional Cumbrian towns with their quaint markets, pubs and inns.

Day 4

Continue south today and pass from the rural retreat of the Lakes to a stark Cityscape as you explore Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2008. Liverpool is a unique city full of character and, with the most listed buildings outside of London, there is a photo opportunity round every corner. The only city in Europe boasting two cathedrals, begin your day by visiting each of these impressive structures and then head down-town to experience the city’s Beatles history. Visit Matthews Street and the famous Cavern club where they first played together. Taking the Magical Mystery Tour on a sixties tecnicolour bus will let you visit Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. After visiting the Beatles Story exhibition in the stylish Albert Docks and you can enjoy the impressive Tate Art Gallery and view the grand Liver buildings with Liverpool’s famous Liverbirds looking out over the river.

Just a short drive south is a more tranquil city, located within its original Roman city walls and beyond the famous East gate clock tower, lies Chester. Its main streets are The Rows where you can amble around the unique galleried arcades which are set on two tiers and styled in Georgian and Victorian mock Tudor offering a beautiful ambience to the city. For a spot of shopping visit Chester’s traditional market and then on to the grand Chester cathedral which has stood in the city for almost 800 years.
