Skye and the Highlands of Scotland

The Tour

Day 1

Arrive into Glasgow and get straight on the exploration trail. Journeying north you’ll find yourself in the beautiful countryside in no time at all travelling through the Trossachs national park countryside (once the hideaway for infamous outlaw, Rob Roy) and along the shores of Loch Lomond. Your first stop can be the beautiful 18th century town of Inveraray, home of the powerful Campbell clan, the Dukes of Argyll. Visit Invararay Castle and the famous town jail where you can sit in on a trial and discover the harsh treatment received by prisoners here in centuries gone by. From here continue north in to Scotland’s western highlands and travelling towards the quaint town of Oban with its sweeping bay and bustling port. Oban is of course home to one of Scotland’s most famous Malt Whiskys and after visiting the distillery to see how its made head back to your hotel to sample a tot in the hotel bar before bed.

Overnight near Oban.

Day 2

Oban is also known as the gateway to the Isles as ferries depart here for the Hebridean Islands and some of Scotland’s most beautiful coastal views. Hop over the waters today to explore the largest, the Isle of Mull. Journey down to the most western tip of Mull where you get spectacular views to the tiny isle of Iona and its Abbey. Or head north to the tiny port of Tobermory where you can see pre-historic standing stones, visit Tobermory distillery or take a boat to search for whales and dolphins in the chilly Hebridean waters and to see puffins nesting on the craggy cliffs. Return to the mainland in the evening and take the road to Glencoe on the shores of Loch Levin, the eerie setting for the infamous massacre of one clan by another. Finally journey north to Fort William a picturesque harbour town standing in the shadows of Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis.

Overnight Fort William

Day 3

Today enjoy one of the most scenic drives of your vacation as you make your way north passing the impressive Glennfinnan viaduct made famous by the Harry Potter movies and the Hogwarts Express. Take the car ferry from Mallaig to reach the Isle of Skye and take the day to explore this incredible island which is home to the imposing cuillin hills, beautiful wildlife, ancient stone circles dotting the hillsides, dinosaur footprints, malt distilleries, and some of the most iconic images of Scotland in Eilean Donan and Dunvegan castles. Round off the day with a trip to Portree visitor centre and a nightcap before bed.

Overnight Skye.

Day 4

From Skye cross the bridge back to the mainland to the Kyle of Lochalsh and journey south through the heather covered Highlands towards Loch Ness. Your drive to Inverness will take you directly along the shores of what is possibly Scotland’s most famous loch. Stop at one of the loch side parking areas for walks along the banks of the loch, to gaze out over the waters and the mysteries hidden in it depths, and try to get that elusive snap of the monster himself. Continue to the capital of the Highlands nestled on the banks of the river Ness and take time to explore Inverness Museum and Castle.

Overnight Inverness.

Day 5

Today you have the perfect opportunity to explore some of Scotland’s most famous sights including the impressive 12th century Urquhart Castle and the eerie battlefield on the moors of Culloden where Bonnie Prince Charlie made his last stand. Continue to Fort George an imposing structure whose fearsome fortifications are testament to impressive Scottish 18th century military engineering. Finally, journey south through the relaxing countryside of the Glengorms national Park and quaint towns such as Aviemore, Pitlochry with a stop off at Blair Atholl and Blair Castle. Return to the south and Glasgow or Edinburgh depending on which city you choose for your return flight to the US.
