Inverness
The capital of the Highlands , Inverness is situated at the head of the Great Glen on the shores of the Moray Firth and stands at the cross roads of the wild northern Highlands.
A vibrant bustling city, Inverness is one of the fastest growing cities in Britain. Standing astride the River Ness, the city is located at the head of the Great Glen, leading to the famous Loch Ness and serves as an excellent base for touring the northern reaches of the Highlands, with road, rail and air links in the city.
Though established in the 12th Century, Inverness was only granted city status in 2000, it has a very fresh upbeat atmosphere and its 41,000 or so inhabitants generally offer friendly Highland hospitality. Like all Scottish cities, Inverness has its own castle, museum, gallery and Mercat Cross, but uniquely it has the graceful River Ness where the summer sun glistens beside its grassy banks. Sea cruises in the Moray Firth are available where you may see, osprey, seals and even Minke Whales and bottlenose dolphins. Though this obviously depends on the season, you’re more likely to see large wildlife in these waters than in Loch Ness!
Outside Inverness are some of Scotland ’s most iconic attractions, from the haunting Battlefields of Culloden , the awesome fortress of Fort George and the stunning scenery of the Great Glen and Loch Ness.
