Dundee is Scotland’s 4th largest city, an industrial hub, set on the banks of the Tay, with a rich maritime heritage.
Discovery Point
Dundee grew out of the whaling and ship industries. After Edinburgh, it was once the second most important trading city and by the 19th Century Dundee played a key role in the shipbuilding and railway engineering industries. Today Dundee is the main shopping and commercial centre for Tayside and Fife.
Dundee’s maritime history is outlined in the museum at Broughty Castle but the main attractions in Dundee are Discovery Point, centred on the vessel, the Discovery, which was built in Dundee and used by Captain Scott to explore the Antarctic. Also recalling Dundee’s naval history is the HMS Frigate the Unicorn standing in Victoria Dock. Built in 1824, it is the oldest British warship still afloat and almost completely original.
Close by is Glamis Castle, famously the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and home to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The castle certainly lives up to its billing, with turrets, towers, ghosts and the haunting scenery of the Grampians.
