View from Balcony at Powis Castle, Welshpool, Co. Powys
One of Wales ’ grandest residences with world famous gardens, Powis Castle offers visitors a staggering combination of opulent décor, medieval architecture, natural beauty and treasures from India.
Powis Castle
The red stone castle dates back to the 13th Century and was owned by Gruffudd ap Gwynwynwyn Prince of Powys whose title later changed to the Marquis of Powis (which rolls much easier off the English speaking tongue!).
Powis castle was enriched by its later owners the Herberts and the Clives. In the16th Century the castle was owned by the son of the Earl of Pembroke, Sir Edward Herbert, who remodelled much of the castle’s interior and built the Long Gallery with its fine plaster ceiling and rare 1st century Roman marbles. In the 17th Century Powis castle passed into the hands of the Clives, who furnished it with a selection of treasures brought from the Colonies by the illustrious Clive of India. These include priceless jade, ivory and bronze works, ancient armoury and textiles including part of Tipu Sahib’s Tent.
Powis Gardens
The dramatic terraced gardens are a rare survivor of 17th Century landscape architecture. Overhung with enormous clipped yew trees, with colourful herbaceous borders, the gardens are wonderfully laid out with influences of
Italian and French styles and retain their original lead statutes of Greek figures, shepherds and bagpipers!
The gardens also boast and Orangery, Aviary and extensive parklands and wild woodland which contrast the controlled character of the terrace gardens and carefully manicured lawns.
