The home of the Marquis of Anglesey , Plas Newydd’s 18th Century palatial sprawl is home to an excellent Whistler collection including the famous mural.
Plas Newydd
Plas Newydd is set in 2.5km of coastline along the Menai Straits with stunning views across to the Snowdonia Mountains . In 1790 the owner of the house the Earl of Uxbridge gave James Wyatt the task of improving the house mixing neo-classical and gothic styles.
The interiors include Wyatt’s splendid vaulted and galleried Gothic Hall and Music Room, decked out with medieval themes. But the most famous and popular section of Plas Newydd is the Rex Whistler Room containing his largest painting commissioned by the 6th Marquess of Anglesey; the 18m tall Plas Newydd Mural stretching along the wall of the dining room.
The first Marquess of Anglesey, one of the houses illustrious owners, was the cavalry commander at the Battle of Waterloo and served alongside the Duke of Wellington. According to popular legend, on losing his leg in battle the Marquis turned to the Duke and with typically British understatement said, ‘By God sir, I’ve lost my leg’! The Duke replied, ‘By God sir, so you have’. An interesting Military Museum in the house includes relics from Waterloo including one of the very first articulated wooden legs made, belonging to the Marquis himself.
