Pevensey Castle, Pevensey, Co. East Sussex

Pevensey castle can look back on a long history. Originally it was erected as a roman fort in the 3rd century to protect Roman Britain from invasions of Saxon enemies.

In 1042 the Anglo-Saxon Earl of Wessex, established a fort at this place and strenghened the defense of the fort by carving trenches. The castle was then held by the english army until 1066 until the Norman invaders under William the Conqueror or later William I of England attacked the fortification.

At around 1100 the castle was owned by a half-brother of William, Robert Count of Montain. Under the Count Pevensey was transformed from a fort into a norman castle. Later on a twin tower gatehouse was added to upgrade the defense against potential attacks of the Spanish Armada. During WWII the castle was home to an anti-aircrft unit. This was the last military situation for the castle.

Pevensey castle is now owned by the 'English Heritage' and can be visited almost all year long except during Christmas and New Year.
