A traditional 13th century coaching inn with excellent modern facilities, The Red Lion Hotel in Salisbury, is held to be one of the oldest hotels in the Britain. Almost every town in England has it’s own Red Lion hostelry, but this one in the centre of the historic town of Salisbury has a unique claim. Built over 750 years ago to house draughtsmen working on nearby Salisbury Cathedral, this Red Lion claims to be the oldest purpose built hotel in Britain. Fittingly much of the hotel’s original features still stand, from its charming timber frames and black and white exterior to the medieval fireplace inside found during recent excavations. Another interesting facet to the Red Lion is that it has been owned by the same family for almost 100 years, ensuring a firm pride in its standards and hospitality. Inside, the Red Lion has blended its old world charm with modern comforts and facilities in individually decorated bedrooms and antique filled public rooms. The Vine Restaurant is renowned for its mix of traditional English cooking and Continental cuisine and the Frothblowers Arms is the hotel’s friendly pub. The Red Lion is central to Salisbury and situated close to the town’s 13th Century Cathedral and is ideally placed for touring the sights of Salisbury Plain and the Famous Stonehenge. |
