Lewtrenchard Manor

Luxury accommodation in Britain

A secluded 16th Century manor house hidden away beside the wild hills of Dartmoor, Lewtrenchard Manor, steeped in historic character lies virtually untouched by time.

Surrounded by blissful gardens of lush green shrubs and iridescent flowers, this exquisite Jacobean Manor House is a treasure trove, rich in antiquarian interest. All around Lewtrenchard you will find curious features like, stone window sills filled stain glass, interior slate floors, wonderful oak panelling in the dining rooms and drawing rooms, a magnificent oak fireplace in the bar, a sweeping oak staircase, ornate plasterwork ceilings throughout and broad galleries with antique furniture and heraldic oil paintings.

The list of historic curiosities continues into the bedrooms where in one you will find an original bed that once belonged to Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of hapless and later headless Charles I. Each suite has its own unique character, from burnished oak panelling, to elaborate plasterwork and four-poster beds. All are furnished to a very high standard, in keeping with the character of the Hotel and a fitted with generously sized baths.

Diners at Lewtrenchard are treated to generous portions of wholesome, well prepared modern English cuisine, that is flavoursome and unfussy using the best of local seasonal produce. Winter sees a strong emphasis on local game, while the local fishmonger at nearby Looe presents the best of his daily catch every morning and most of the vegetables and herbs are grown in Lewtranchard's walled garden. Fine food is matched in the cellar by a richly diverse selection of around 300 bins. In the summer months the colonnaded courtyard, tucked away and garlanded with flowers provides the perfect setting for dining al fresco.

Much of the upkeep of Lewtrenchard Manor is accredited to its Victorian era owner the Reverend Sabine Baring Gould, novelist, and composer of ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’. He is also reputed to have inspired George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, after he fell in love with a beautiful unschooled Yorkshire mill girl, but sent her to be educated before marrying her.

Lewtrenchard is perfectly situated for exploring the Devonshire countryside. Trout fishing, clay pigeon shooting and hawk walking are all available on the estate and horse riding on Dartmoor can be arranged. Picturesque Cornwall is also within a days tour.
