Originally a coaching inn dating from the 1700s, The Devonshire is an elegant country house hotel set within the sweeping countryside of the Yorkshire Dales.
People are often struck by the timeless beauty of the Wharfedale countryside; a rural setting of lowland moors and ancient oaks cut by the River Wharfe, beside which the wistful ruins of Bolton Abbey reside. Much of this countryside on the very doorsteps of The Devonshire forms the Yorkshire estates of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire who own the hotel.
The Devonshire enjoys the atmosphere of a stately country residence, furnished with fine antiques and oil paintings taken from Chatsworth House, the home of the Devonshires. This is complemented by friendly and attentive staff who instil warm Yorkshire hospitality. The selection of graceful public areas offer a variety of ambiences from gentleman’s club, authentic coaching inn and light and airy summer house.
The Hotel’s bedrooms are situated both in the old section and a more recent but sympathetic extension overlooking delightful Italian gardens. All the rooms are individually named and themed, and arranged with impeccable attention to detail. Features in some rooms include antiques and paintings from the Devonshires’ personal collection, hand painted wallpaper, gothic four-poster bed and 19th Century décor.
The Burlington Restaurant at the Hotel is renowned for its exhaustive wine list and fine dining. The cellar is one of the biggest in Europe, with around 1500 bins, a choice of over 60 house wines and an interesting collection of rare wines. The imaginative menu draws from a wealth of fine local produce, much of its poultry, game and fish, are taken from the Estate and vegetables and herbs are taken from the extensive kitchen gardens and with a Michelin Star, it’s a winning combination. An informal alternative is offered in the adjoining Devonshire Brasserie and Bar with excellent bistro style food.
Other great indulgences the Hotel offers are the huge array of beauty treatments available at The Devonshire Club, in a renovated barn opposite the Hotel. This health spa also houses a heated swimming pool, fully equipped gym, sauna, steam room and solarium.
