The Samling

Luxury accommodation in Britain

A little hidden gem of a hotel nestled into 67 acres of woodland countryside overlooking Lake Windermere, the Samling mixes the classic with the contemporary in a very stylish way.

The classic is the fairy tale country cottage exterior that dates back to 1780 and was where William Wordsworth would visit to pay his rent on nearby Dove Cottage. The contemporary being a shake up of normal hotel conventions and sophisticated, seductive interiors that have attracted a celebrity clientele.

The Samling is a hotel in the country but emphatically not a country house hotel. There is no reception area, no bar as such, instead the focal point of the hotel is a stylish, intimate drawing room, where you’ll find a friendly welcome and chilled drink and at the Samling breakfast in bed is the gratefully accepted norm. The Samling is often used as an exclusive house for block bookings, where group guests, or family groupings can (for a tidy sum) have the whole house and grounds to themselves.

The hotel has a selection of simply exquisite suites, five in the main house and five have been fashioned from original cottages and all but two share the stunning lake views. The suites are named after local scenery or after the numbering system for counting livestock in the old Cumbrian tongue, Yan, Tyan, Tethera… No expense has been spared with lavish furnishings, attractive design features and the latest home gadgets as well as spectacular bathrooms and each suite has its own sense of character with plenty to boast about. Among these suites you will find a communal hot tub overlooking Lake Windermere, an American log cabin and an antique rainshower bath reputed to have belonged to Winston Churchill!

The Samling boasts a popular restaurant where the finest and freshest ingredients are matched by the finest and freshest ideas offering modern European cuisine that is extremely well presented. The cellar is well renowned too for the quality and variety of its fine wines and whiskies.

You could very easily cocoon yourself at The Samling, but its proximity to Lake Windermere and the heart of the Lake District makes it a great base for touring the area and The Samling can even arrange activities such as water sports and horse riding.
