A characterful townhouse of interesting historic note, the Royal offers friendly hospitality in elegant surroundings, right in the heart of England’s ancient capital, Winchester. The original building in which the Royal resides was built in the Restoration period of King Charles II in the 16th Century. It was then a Bishop’s residence, a convent and a place of refuge for persecuted Catholics. Now as a hotel it provides an intimate refuge where guests can enjoy bubbly and charming service added to a high level of hospitality. The entrance and reception area of the Royal are impressively decked out in rich mahogany panelling and polished marble flooring, the attractive public areas are light and airy, the refined bar adjoined by a relaxed lounge is perfect for pre-dinner drinks and opens out onto the splendid walled garden, with well kept lawns bordered by colourful flower beds, a typically English setting in the summer. The Winchester Royal has an attractively appointed conservatory restaurant overlooking the gardens. After drinks and canapés in the bar, guests can enjoy an excellent meal of classic British cuisine blended with a touch of European flair and accompanied by a selection of fine wines, along with cheery and courteous service. The bedrooms, which vary in size, are well appointed and comfortably unfussy, equipped with all the essential facilities and the Royal also has some larger suites with sumptuous half-tester beds and classic furnishings. The charming old cathedral city of Winchester has an abundance of heritage and interesting sights for such a quiet small town and its secret is quite well kept. The Saxon King Alfred made Winchester his capital in the 9th Century and he is commemorated with a bold statue in the centre of the town. The 12th Century Cathedral and Winchester College are delightful places to visit and the Winchester Royal arranges complimentary guided walking tours of the town. |
