Allt-yr-Ynys is a beautifully preserved, 16th Century manor house, set in the foothills of the Black Mountains on the fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This wonderful country hideaway is situated right on the border with England, indeed the River Monnow which marks that border, actually flows through the grounds of Allt-yr-Ynys. The ivy clad Grade II listed building is steeped in history and was the ancestral home of the influential Cecil family most notably Lord Burghley who was secretary of state for queen Elizabeth I and was often granted to those who curried favour with Royalty. The public areas are brimming with historic character and many of the buildings original Jacobean features are in evidence, such as the splendid oak panelling, stone floors, ornamental plasterwork ceilings and also a ‘priest’s hole’ where Catholic Priests would hide during the Reformation. One of the most splendid items is a 16th Century four-poster bed in one of the bedrooms. Accommodation is split between the fabulous rooms of the original old house and slightly more spacious rooms in converted farm buildings. Each of the bedrooms are individually decorated incorporating many attractive features in keeping with the historic ambience of Allt-yn-Ynys. The rooms in the modern accommodation offer the extra comfort of under floor heating and spacious patios with marvellous views of the peak of Skenfrith. Allt-yn-Ynys’ award winning restaurant serves up the very best of British cooking complimented by wines from a carefully selected list, set in elegant surroundings. Should you need to work up an appetite, Allt-yn-Ynys lavishly decadent covered heated swimming pool, hot tub and sauna or alternatively there are the 16 acres of gentle gardens to meander around which include an elegant knot garden and river bank walks. |
