The Bear Hotel is a delightfully charming and friendly Coaching Inn that offers great hospitality in an old fashioned, rural setting. The pretty whitewashed front of The Bear Hotel, donned with hanging baskets of flowers, is a highly visible focal point for the quaint village of Crickhollow in the Brecon Beacons. The hotel dates back to 1432 and encapsulates the old style of the coaching inn; cobbled forecourt and courtyard entered through a low, narrow archway, low beamed ceilings, old slate walls, cosy public areas and even a 19th Century coaching timetable in the bar. The warm and friendly hospitality of hosts and staff also provide the perfect welcome after a long drive, as it would have done for a long coach ride in years gone by. For a comparatively small hotel the bedrooms are quite sizeable. Split between the older coach house area and the renovated stables the rooms vary in size and are all individually decorated, tastefully mixing old features and antique furnishings with modern facilities. Rooms in the coach house area include suites with fabulous four poster beds and all have low beamed roofs and oak wood structures that add to the traditional ambience, but could be awkward for taller guests. The stables would prove more airy and less cumbersome and are set around the attractive courtyard. The Bear Hotel has won numerous prestigious awards and recommendations for its restaurant and its pub. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh local produce and homegrown herbs to conjure up interesting dishes and traditional welsh favourites, specialising in fish and lamb. The traditional cosy pub is popular with guests and locals alike sampling the warmth of the log fireplace, the atmosphere and of course a good old pint of beer. The town is a handy location for fishing in the river Usk just below Crickhollow, for gentle mountain walks and pony treks in the Brecon Beacons or more strenuous hikes in the black mountains and the Bear Hotel makes the perfect place to relax and unwind afterwards. |
