The medieval town of Conwy is the perfect setting for the Castle Hotel, a historic building that has been tastefully brought up to date with some fabulous modern touches. The Castle Hotel sits along narrow cobbled streets at the heart of the walled town of Conwy, and is a worthy neighbour of the impressive 13th Century fortress Conwy Castle. The hotel’s own interesting history dates back to the 15th Century when it was originally a Cistercian Abbey, since then the Castle Hotel has famously served as a coaching inn. The red sandstone porch with its impressive bay window above the doorway marks a striking entrance and the public areas maintain a traditional character with galleries adorned with paintings of Shakespearean scenes by Victorian artist John Dawson – Watson. The story goes that he gave these in return for lodgings, though one is unfinished as he came into money and checked out. Each of the suites are individually decorated to lavish tastes; from the decadent, with a huge twin Jacuzzi, to the antique, with an elegant hand carved four-poster bed dated 1570 that was reputedly once slept in by King Charles I. All suites are well appointed and well kept with grandiose beds and pristine, well-lit bathrooms and each have a unique quality that will certainly impress. Standard rooms are all sizable, with large beds and amble bathrooms though they are due to be updated to match the suites. The Castle Hotel is part owned by the chef and he and the hosts pride themselves on their restaurant and the menu they provide. The Shakespeare’s restaurant serves a wide selection of the very best Welsh local produce, with flair and friendliness that has won awards and acclaim. The stylishly modern bar area also sees a steady stream of local custom for food at lunch times. A warm welcome is guaranteed from the extremely hospitable hosts who obviously care about their hotel and your time spent in it. With ample parking at the rear you don’t have to worry about parking on Conwy’s narrow streets. |
