Located in attractive grounds at the end of the Great Glen, one and a half miles from Inverness, Lochardil House makes an appealing retreat close to some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. Built in 1876 this splendid Victorian house surrounded by gardens of mature pine was originally the home of Member of Parliament, Charles Fraser-Mackintosh, a champion of Highland land reform and once the only Gaelic speaker in the House of Commons. Today Lochardil as a hotel retains that Victorian charm, a classic sweeping stair case greets you in reception and the drawing room houses a fabulous panoramic tapestry. Depicting the Old Testament story of Esther, this spectacular piece of art dates back to the late 1700s, being situated in what was originally the dining room it would no doubt have inspired interesting conversation while dining. At Lochardil table d’hote and a la carte lunches and dinners are served in the large, airy conservatory over looking the gardens. Chefs serve up traditional Scottish fare drawn from the rich bounty of the region from both land and sea. Adjacent to the conservatory is Lochardil’s friendly cocktail bar, popular with guests and locals alike. The Bedrooms are spacious, tastefully decorated and furnished and equipped with luxuriously capacious bathtubs. Friendly and helpful staff add to the sleepy atmosphere of Lochardil House and the hotel is ideally situated for some delightful country walks into Stratherrick or the Ness Islands on nearby River Ness. While being a short journey from Inverness airport Lochardil’s location gives you the chance to explore the spectacular scenery of the Highlands; the Great Glen, Lochaber, the mountains of Wester Ross and Sutherland, the Isle of Skye and the quaint fishing villages of the east coast. |
