This old Victorian building was originally Edinburgh’s first maternity hospital built in 1879 and was one of the first hospitals in Britain. The attractive small courtyard in the middle of the stone structure opens into what would have been the hospital’s main entrance, now the hotel lobby. The spacious reception area offers a welcoming entrance for guests with great attention to detail offering an almost matronly touch. Each of the 52 rooms are set out differently owing to the building’s design but all are equally spick and span, again perhaps a gentle reminder of their medicinal origins. In contrast to the old architecture of the building, the rooms are modernly furnished with a functional but pleasant décor. The hotel’s staff are genuinely warm, friendly and helpful and the breakfast, with a selection of traditional fare from typical full Scottish, to kippers or haddock, comes well recommended. Given its location, Edinburgh City Hotel is aptly named. Situated in a quiet residential area, in close proximity to the main rail and bus terminals, the hotel is just a short walk (or quick taxi) away from the castle and the Royal Mile, the main shops and amenities and most of the theatres and festivals. As such it serves as a perfect base for getting out and about around the City. |
