Penny Lane
As the major port for transatlantic trade and immigration, Liverpool thrived from the 17th to the 19th Centuries. Many of those passing through from places like the Caribbean and Ireland settled in Liverpool establishing the strong communities of today’s Liverpudlians. During WWII Liverpool was the first port of call for over one million American GIs, who brought with them the musical tastes that were to later inspire the Beatles . In more recent years fortune hasn’t favoured Liverpool, being one of the hardest hit of Britain’s proud working class cities during the 1980s. Though within the last decade or so Liverpool has come out of the shadows and is in the midst of urban development programmes, most notably along the Albert Dock and Paradise Street areas and a cultural reawakening with its celebration as the European City of Culture for 2008.
