Tucked neatly into the picturesque countryside, Hill Top is the Lakeland home where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her famous children’s stories.
Hidden away in the hamlet of Near Sawney, this tiny 17th Century house is where Beatrix Potter found the twee quaintness and inspiration for her illustrated stories of Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Tabitha Twitchit and a whole host of other cutesy creatures with sugar coated names, which have enthralled children for generations.
Beatrix Potter lived at Hill Top until her death in 1943 and today the house attracts thousands of visitors looking to relive their childhood memories. Hill Top has been left exactly as the writer left it, complete with furniture, impressive collection of china and a display of personal treasures, such as Beatrix Potter’s watercolours and her doll’s house.
In the nearby village of Hawkshead, the Beatrix Potter Gallery is also worth a visit. On display are a collection of some of Beatrix Potter’s original sketches and paintings of her famous characters, produced over 100 years ago alongside an exhibition on her life and works.
