Main Entrance Farleigh-Hungerford Castle
Situated on the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire, Fareleigh Hungerford Castle was built by Sir Thomas Hungerford and later modified by his son Sir Walter. A tall curtain wall surrounded the castle with a tower at each of the four corners, though only two remain today. The southwest tower still stands at its full height some five storeys high, while the curtain wall to the north side also remains at its full height. The remains also include those of a 14th Century chapel and the outer gatehouse.

The outer bailey was constructed at a later stage along with the defensive barbican and the east gateway. This was used as the main entrance to the castle and the Hungerford coat of arms, can still be seen in a crest above the archway. Sir Walter also built the church of St Leonard, situated within the perimeter wall. Much of the original wall paintings in this chapel still survive and visitors can view the Hungerford family tombs, dating back to the 14th Century.

Almost five centuries of history are to be discovered at Farleigh Hungerford Castle as outlined with exhibits excavated from the castle ruins that are housed in the former Priests House, itself dating from the 15th Century.
