In more recent times this fabulous building was grossly misused as a cinema and dance hall throughout the 20th Century. Some rooms of the house are laid out as scenes from an 18th century household, while others simple exhibit some exquisite collections of heirlooms and artefacts from this period. The lavishly decorated Dining room is set out for a Georgian Christmas feast with fine silverware and iced sugar fruits. The fabulous ceiling, with its central motif took over 1,000 man-hours to restore, painstakingly cleaning and scraping away paint from its days as a dancehall. Elsewhere in the house the Kitchens are remodelled to create the atmosphere of 18th century servant’s quarters and the bedrooms and stunning Saloon are also decked out in furnishings Viscount Fairfax would have been accustomed to and there is also a large and interesting collection of ‘John Bull’ satire strips to be seen.
