Day 1 - London Stonehenge Salisbury Bath Bristol

The day begins with a drive via the mysterious monoliths of Stonehenge to Salisbury where you view the cathedral with the tallest spire in Britain. Then travel on to the city of Bath, which is famous for the hot springs which were first discovered by the Romans over 2,000 years ago! You will have the chance to visit the Roman Baths and to admire the elegant Georgian architecture of the city's squares and crescents which were the setting for several of Jane Austen's novels. Later continue to the hotel in Bristol where you dine tonight. (Dinner)

Hotel: Ibis Temple Meads Quay (F)

Day 2 - Bristol Chester Lake District

This morning cross the Severn in to Wales and follow the Wye Valley for views of the ruins of Tintern Abbey; only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain and an inspiration to both painters and poets. Then head north to Chester to see the Roman Walls, the cathedral and the black and white timbered buildings, known as the Rows. Then we continue to the hotel close to the magnificent Lake District which is renowned for its magnificent scenery and has been an inspiration to artists, poets and writers over the centuries. (Full Breakfast / Dinner)

Hotel: Holiday Inn Lancaster (F)

Day 3 - Lake District Glasgow

Today visit the village of Grasmere where the poet, William Wordsworth, lived and wrote his most well-known poem, 'The Daffodils' and also enjoy views of spectacular Lake Windermere. Then head north to the Scottish border and Gretna Green, where eloping couples once married against their parents' wishes. Finally, cross the Southern Uplands to reach the hotel in Glasgow which is the largest city in Scotland and the third most populous city in the United Kingdom. (Full Breakfast)

Hotel: Ibis Glasgow (MF)

Day 4 - Glasgow Scottish Highlands

After an orientation of this vibrant city, drive into the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands. First 'along the bonnie banks' of Loch Lomond , past Inverary Castle, home to the Dukes of Argyll which is a remarkable and unique piece of architecture incorporating Baroque, Palladian and Gothic styles. Then continue via pretty Oban and Fort William which lies in the shadow of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. The summit lies at 4,409 feet above sea-level, but the main attraction for mountaineers are the high cliffs of the north face, which are among the highest in the United Kingdom. Later arrive in your Highland hotel which is in the well-known Scottish ski-resort of Aviemore, which is situated in the Cairngorms National Park and is also renowned as a centre for hill walking. (Full Breakfast / Dinner)

Hotel: Macdonalds Highland Resort (F)

Day 5 - Scottish Highlands St. Andrews Edinburgh (2 nights)

Drive through Pitlochry, famous for salmon fishing and its 'fish ladder' on the river's dam, which enables the salmon to progress upstream in order to spawn. Then travel on to St. Andrews, where Prince William went to university, but perhaps more famous as the place where golf was born! Here stop to take a picture of the 18th hole before driving on to the region of Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, and the hotel, which lies in the Falkirk region where the Highlands meet the Lowlands, and has an interesting history dating back to medieval times. (Full Breakfast)

Hotel: Airth Castle (F)

Day 6 - Edinburgh sightseeing and at leisure

Today the guided sightseeing tour shows us the Royal Mile, Princes Street and the famous castle. It is in the courtyard of the castle that the spectacular annual event known as the Edinburgh Tattoo takes place in August as part of the wider Edinburgh Festival. Later there is free time to explore further and to shop for souvenirs. Tonight, maybe enjoy a lively Scottish banquet with traditional haggis and bagpipe music? (Full Breakfast)

Day 7 - Edinburgh York Leeds

This morning cross the Border country back into England and drive through the Northumberland National Park to see part of Hadrian's Wall , which was built to keep out the Scots! Then continue south, crossing the River Tyne at Newcastle, before arriving in York, reputedly the most haunted city in England. Then the Tour Director will take you on a walk through the quaint streets known as the Shambles with tales about the Vikings who invaded this part of England and ruled over the city for nearly 100 years. Then continue to the hotel in Leeds, where dinner is served tonight. (Full Breakfast / Dinner)

Hotel: Jurys Inn Leeds (F)

Day 8 - Leeds Coventry Stratford-upon-Avon London

Drive through the Midlands to Coventry to view the old and new cathedrals. The decision to build the new cathedral was made only the day after the old one was virtually destroyed by bombing during the 'Blitz' in 1940. In 1950 a competition was held to find the most suitable design for the replacement cathedral. The winning controversial design came from Sir Basil Spence and the new cathedral was consecrated in 1962. Then on to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon , with time to explore or shop. Next travel through the pretty Cotswold countryside on the way back to London where it is time to bid farewell to your new-found friends and Tour Director at the end of the tour. (Full Breakfast)
