Caldey Island
A short boat trip from Tenby is Caldey Island, the site of a 6th Century monastic settlement, and home to communities of grey seals and seabirds.
Though nothing remains of the early Celtic monastery, a present Cistercian community has practiced here in the red tiled monastery since the 1920s. The seclusion and religious roots of the island enhance it’s ethereal quality and the terrace of whitewashed cottages are look timeless but were in fact built in 1953. The cliff top lighthouse and the 13th Century Church of St Illtud are the highlight of the trip.
The islands wildlife colonies are protected by the Wildlife Trust and can be seen inhabiting the tiny island of St Margaret’s, beside Caldey.
