Caerwent

The small, pretty village of Caerwent just 8km from Chepstow and 18km from Newport was once the largest civilian settlement of Romans in Wales.

Caerwent - Roman remains
Venta Silurum

Caerwent was founded by the Romans in 75 AD as Venta Silurum and served as a market town for the Silures. A powerful tribe that lived in southern Wales by the time. They were defeated by the Romans earlier.

Eleven different sites of the Roman town have been excavated since the 1930s and though all that remains is mostly foot high foundations, they clearly outline the form of what were once accommodation blocks, a forum,  shops and a temple.

Some of these ancient buildings even had underground floor heating systems, a testament to Roman engineering and a handy mod-con for the Welsh weather.
