Anne Hathaways Cottage, Stratford, Co. Warwickshire

This delightful little cottage just outside Stratford is where the wife of William Shakespeare lived and is maintained by Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust.

Anne Hathaways HouseShakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and this 15th century thatched farmhouse was where she lived, and her descendants continued to live until the early 20th century. Shakespeare was just 18 when he married Anne, who was six years older than him, and 3 months pregnant. Shortly after she gave birth to their first child, Shakespeare left for London and fame and fortune.

The cottage displays family heirlooms and the Shakespeare Tree Garden contains samples of each of the trees mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays. Tickets for Anne Hathaway’s Cottage can be purchased together with those for related Shakespeare Sites from Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust.
